Mencap Liverpool & Sefton is a local learning disability charity - we're affiliated to but independent of Royal Mencap.
We work with adults who have mild-moderate learning disability and have little or no support.
We are NOT a support provider, and we receive NO statutory funding. We are 100% funded by grants and donations.
In general, the sessions and activities we run and facilitate are for people with a learning disability who receive little or no support.
Our services are designed to help people resolve their issues and through a range of training and activities build up their confidence, self-esteem, life-skills and a network of real friendships.
Who can you refer:
Adults (18+) who have a mild-moderate learning disability - this does not need to be diagnosed but the individual needs to consider themselves to have a learning disability and we only work with people who live in Liverpool or Sefton.
Please do not refer a person if they don't have a learning disability. This delays people getting to the right help for them.
What we do:
Outreach- we visit people who are referred to us - normally in their homes or somewhere local and familiar to them. During the first 6-12 weeks we work more intensively to help the person deal with the problems which triggered the referral.
We normally do this by way of informal advocacy, helping the person to successfully access and engage with other agencies. We also introduce them to our activities which helps reduce their social isolation, build confidence, self-esteem and friends.
How to refer:
Complete the referral form found on our website (https://www.mencapliverpool.org.uk/outreach). Anyone can refer as long as you have the consent of the individual - we also encourage self-referrals.
Timescales:
It normally takes around 2 weeks for us to get in touch after we receive a referral - we're a small charity.
Funding:
The majority of our work is free to access, with the activities and social groups being about £3.50 a session.
